Viki Platform Unified Digital Education Across Slovakia

We architected, designed, deployed, and supported Slovakia’s central digital education platform, now used by over 18,000 schools and 114,000 teachers and students nationwide.

About Ministry of Education

Between 2009 and 2018, the Ministry and its subordinate institutions implemented several projects to procure digital educational content, which was made available to selected users across various platforms. With Viki, this content has been centralized and made accessible through a single technological platform.

Project Summary

As a subcontractor to AGEMSOFT, we partnered with the Ministry to deliver Viki, a comprehensive national e-learning platform architected to serve as a mission-critical infrastructure rather than a simple content library. We managed the entire project lifecycle, from initial requirements analysis and functional design to the implementation and long-term operational support of the system. This end-to-end involvement ensured that the technical architecture remained flawlessly aligned with the strategic educational goals of the national curriculum.

The Challenge

From Fragmentation to One National Platform

Prior to the launch of the Viki platform, digital educational content in Slovakia suffered from extreme fragmentation across multiple isolated projects and platforms. This decentralized approach led to an inconsistent user experience for both teachers and students, as initiatives often resulted in duplicated tools and content that were difficult to maintain or scale over the long term. Consequently, the inherent complexity of navigating these scattered systems significantly limited adoption across the national school network.

The Ministry required a single, authoritative platform to consolidate existing resources while maintaining the flexibility to support future educational initiatives. This challenge extended beyond technical architecture to encompass complex organizational and human factors, as the system had to be designed for tens of thousands of schools with vastly different levels of digital maturity. Our role was to translate this vision into a resilient national system capable of supporting the diverse needs of teachers, students, and administrators while ensuring long-term sustainability and security.

ELIA helped us transform a fragmented landscape of digital education projects into a single, reliable national platform used daily by schools across Slovakia. What set them apart was their ability to align complex technical architecture with long-term educational strategy, not just short-term delivery. Viki is now a mission-critical system for teachers, students, and administrators, stable, scalable, and built to evolve with the needs of our national curriculum.

The Solution

A National Digital Education Backbone

We approached the Viki project as a mission-critical infrastructure initiative rather than a standard web platform, focusing on creating a resilient backbone for Slovakia’s digital education strategy. Our engagement covered the entire lifecycle, beginning with a rigorous requirements and architecture analysis in close collaboration with the Ministry and key stakeholders from the education sector. This process allowed us to define a modular and extensible architecture tailored to meet stringent expectations for security, availability, and national-scale scalability. By establishing long-term architectural principles and clear integration paths for both existing and future systems, we ensured the platform could evolve alongside changing educational needs.

Comprehensive User-Centric Design and Usability

Recognizing that educational platforms depend entirely on user adoption, we executed a complete UI and UX design phase that resulted in over 1,000 unique screens. Our design language was engineered to balance powerful administrative functionality with everyday practicality, focusing on intuitive workflows for teachers and accessible interfaces for students across all age groups.

End-to-End Platform Capabilities

The resulting platform serves as a multi-functional ecosystem, integrating a structured digital content library with sophisticated publishing tools and a robust role-based access control system for students, teachers, and administrators. The technical core facilitates a seamless educational loop: teachers can create and distribute materials, students engage via interactive learning tools, and assignments are managed through an automated evaluation engine. To ensure institutional oversight, we implemented comprehensive reporting and statistics modules that provide school authorities with real-time data on engagement and performance.

Engineered for High-Availability and Operational Reliability

To earn the trust of educators nationwide, we moved beyond development to provide full production deployment and ongoing operational support. We prioritized high-availability principles to support daily school operations, implementing continuous performance monitoring and incident handling to ensure reliability during peak usage periods. This operational mindset, combined with a secure infrastructure for handling sensitive educational data, has transformed Viki into a stable, high-performance foundation for the country's digital future.

The Result

A Unified Standard for Digital Education

Viki has successfully transformed a previously fragmented ecosystem into a unified national platform that is now adopted by the vast majority of Slovak schools. By consolidating scattered resources, the system has established itself as the primary repository for digital educational content across the country while serving as a foundational infrastructure for all future digital education initiatives.

The platform has evolved into an essential daily working tool for both teachers and students, supporting interactive classroom teaching and automated evaluation processes. This transition from isolated projects to a resilient, single national platform ensures long-term sustainability and provides administrators with the reporting and analytics necessary to drive continuous educational improvement.
